An internet meme is a concept, image or video that is widespread through the internet that holds cultural references.
It is usually viral and acts like a private joke that people on the web share.
There are a number of reasons why internet memes are successful, but they are typically unpredictable because the themes are different among each of them. Some appeal to audiences because of its cuteness (Charlie bit me), humor (Bed Intruder), quirkiness, entertainment, fails and even disgust.
Components that makes a Meme (based on Know Your Meme):
Opening; comparing hobos to hipsters (because the internet loves LOLing at hipsters), generates interest
Music selection
Awkward figure that is intriguing to viewers
Became a mystery game; with people in China and HK hunting him down
References back to films and models
Shock and awe factor
Annoyance
Humourous factor established
Becoming a celebrity figure
Trolls (lots and lots)
Overusing phrases in dialogue, or taking out of context
Remixing original clips/images
Our approach:
Three key categories of memes that we decided to aim towards are cuteness, humor or quirkiness.
We have no idea why the internet has a fascination with babies and cats, but it is probably because people cannot resist adoring over cute things. So with keeping that in mind, filming a video with a puppy and a baby should be gold, right?
If we decided to create a video, chances of it becoming a meme becomes greater when there are trolls, creating criticism or even other remixes. Our main idea is to use music to remix a current video that is found online. Remixing or mash-ups are widely popular on Youtube, so by aiming to the existing fanbase will give us a higher chance of making it viral.
We believe it to be hard to start completely from scratch because most memes come from a cultural reference (pop culture). Whether we find a witty remark to manipulate or a video to remix, keeping a close eye on media released daily is crucial. Memes can have a context that is completely unrelated to where it's subjected to on the internet, so it makes the idea of reworking a past character into another context possible.
Based on the research, using celebrities or creating a celebrity can be a large component of a meme. So by reworking or remixing a figure that’s currently in the public eye, it will cause more controversy than a stranger.
Our distribution:
If we decide to create a video, we will initial upload it onto youtube. A successful viral video that has the makings of a meme must initially get a high number of views. One way we came up with is getting it reviewed by others on youtube; ones with a mass subscriber list. An example is RayWilliamJohnson who biweekly reviews viral videos found on youtube. This will create the publicity we need and viewers for our video.
If we decide on a still image or a set of images (like variations, ex: paranoid parrot), we will release it on message boards, chat groups and social media sites. Sites like tumblr can be used to keep track of reposting for the image because the indicated number of reblogs will provide specific feedback.
In order to get the meme out there, we intend to spam it to all the networks we are currently apart of (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Tumblr). By passing it on, hopefully it can go viral.
